Artists’ drawings were made as part of artistic production, not as works of art in themselves. Artists began to collect drawings because of their professional interest, and because they could appreciate the beauty of these "industrial artifacts." Eventually the enthusiasm spread to non-artists, but several generations passed before a significant market developed for drawings made as works of art in themselves for sale and display.
